Managing project templates in SDL Studio Trados 2019

Project templates enable you to store settings and language pairs for future projects, so that you can create projects faster and more consistently. You can also edit your templates and import templates.

Creating project templates based on existing projects

Project templates are created for reuse purposes either based on existing projects or during project creation. Project templates have the *.sdltpl extension.

Procedure

  1. Go to the Projects view.
  2. Right-click a project, and, on the context menu, select Create Project Template.
  3. In the Save Project Template dialog, enter the name you want to assign to the template in the File name box and select Save.
  4. In the Project Template Settings dialog:
  • Select OK, if you do not want to modify the project template. The new project template is now available for selection when you create a new project.
  • Edit the available pages to customize the template settings.

Editing project templates

Project template details can be updated during project creation or after the project template is created. Making changes to a template does not change any projects you created that were based on this template.

Procedure

  1. Go to File > Setup > Project Templates.
  2. In the Project Templates dialog select the project template that you want to edit and select Edit.
  3. In the Project Template Settings dialog, select Project Template from the navigation on the left, and then specify the name and the description. In the Project location box, set a default location for saving the projects you will create based on the template.
  4. Select File Types from the navigation on the left and:
    • Manage settings for file types
    • Manage file types
  5. Select Embedded Content Processors from the navigation on the left, customize the embedded content processors.
  6. Select Verification from the navigation on the left, and modify any automatic verification checks for:
    • QA Checker 3.0
    • Tag Verifier
    • Terminology Verifier
  7. Select Translation Quality Assessment from the navigation on the left, and modify the settings for:
    • TQA Categories
    • TQA Severities
    • TQA Scoring
    • TQA Document Types
    • TQA Profiles
  8. Select Language Pairs from the navigation on the left, and select Add to specify additional language pairs.
  9. Select Language Pairs from the navigation on the left, and select:
    • All Language Pairs > Translation Memory and Automated Translation to modify the settings for TMs and the settings for Automated Translation Providers
    • Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Termbases to modify your termbase selections
    • Select [Source Language Name – Target Language Name ] > AutoSuggest Dictionaries to modify your AutoSuggest dictionary selections
  10. Select Default Task Sequence from the navigation on the left, and select a batch task sequence to run by default when you create your projects.
    • Select a batch task sequence to run by default when you create your projects.
    • Create a custom batch task sequence which you can use in the future:
      1. Select Task Sequences.
      2. In the Task Sequences dialog, select Add.
      3. In the New Task Sequence dialog, select the batch tasks you want to include in this project from the Available Tasks box, and then select Add to include the steps in this project. Tasks that are displayed in gray are not available for selection. This may be because they are already selected or the task does not support the current input file types.
      4. Select OK to close the New Task Sequence dialog.
      5. Select Close to close the Task Sequences dialog.
      6. Select the newly created task sequence from the Task Sequence drop-down list.
  11. Select Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Batch Processing from the navigation on the left. The Batch Processing page is displayed on the right. Select your required settings for:
    • Pseudo-translate
      1. Under Pseudo-translate type, specify how words are selected from the target language dictionaries to simulate translation.
      2. Under Leading/Trailing characters, specify settings to mark the start and end of each string to indicate that pseudo-translation has been applied to that paragraph or segment.
      3. Under Text length modification, in the Expand target segments by factor box, select a number by which text length is multiplied in the pseudo-translate process.
      4. Under Text transformation, choose either of the following options to control the way the pseudo-translated text is rendered.
    • Analyze Files
      1. Select the Report Cross-file Repetitions checkbox, so that cross-file repetitions are counted. This option counts segments that are duplicates of segments in a different file being analyzed in the same task. The number of repetitions (identical segments that occur more than once) in each file is counted by default in a separate repetitions count.
      2. Select the Report internal fuzzy match leverage checkbox, so that the Analyze Files report shows the internal fuzzy match word counts. Internal fuzzy match analysis calculates the maximum additional leverage that can be obtained by the translator interactively translating the file with a TM. It assumes that the translator will translate the file from start to end, segment by segment. After each segment is confirmed, the TM is updated, and the best match applied to the next segment.
      3. Select the Report locked segments as a separate category checkbox, so that the Analyze Files report displays all the locked segments found in the files as a separate category. Knowing how many locked segments are in the project files can help you better estimate the time required to translate the file, as you would not normally need to translate or edit locked files.
      4. Select the Exclude locked segments from analysis checkbox, so that the Analyze Files report excludes all the locked segments found in the files. Skipping locked segments from the active analysis improves analysis speed, especially for files with PerfectMatches and with locked 100% and Context matches.
      5. Under Unknown Segments, decide whether you want to export unknown segments.
      6. Under Frequent Segments, decide whether you want to export frequent segments.
    • Verify Files – Select the Report ignored messages checkbox if you want to consult ignored messages.
    • Project Translation Memories
    • Translation Memory Updates
  1. Select Merge translation units to replace with the latest translation only TUs that have matching context. All the other TUs with the same source segment remain unchanged. This is the default and recommended option for updating TMs.
        • Select Add new translation units to add translations that have the statuses below as new TUs to the TM. This means that the existing TUs in the TM are not overwritten.
        • Select Overwrite existing translation units to import the new TUs and overwrite the existing TUs in the TM.
        • Select Leave translation units unchanged to keep the existing TUs and not import the new ones.
        • Select Keep most recent translation units to keep the most recently changed TU. SDL Trados Studio imports a TU whose source segment is identical to that of an existing TU only if the imported unit is newer than the existing one. If the change date of the TU for import is older than the change date of the existing one, SDL Trados Studio does not replace the existing TU.
      1. Under Segment status specify which TUs are included in the TM update. Select the checkboxes corresponding to the TU status of choice. Three statuses are selected by default: TranslatedTranslation Approved and Signed off.
      2. Select TM User ID to edit your TM username. The TM User ID is used to indicate who added or last edited a translation memory unit. Make sure that you are using an ID by which the project manager can easily identify you
    • Export Files
      1. Under Export files to the following location, consult the default export location (C:\Users\[name]\Documents\Export Files) or select Browse to choose another location.
      2. Under File version to export, select the file version you want to export: Target versionLatest bilingual version or Current version.
    • PerfectMatch – Clear the Ignore formatting during PerfectMatch process checkbox if you do not want to have formatting applied to text while PerfectMatch is applied.

12. Select Planning and Assignments from the navigation on the left, and configure this page if you want to plan and assign work for the projects which will be shared online, via SDL Trados GroupShare.

    1. Select the Publish project on server (SDL Trados GroupShare) checkbox and specify the server information.
    2. Select the target language you want to make assignments for from the list.
    3. Select a project phase.
    4. Select one or more team members from the Available Assignees list, and then select Add to move them to the Selected Assignees list. The users you selected most recently appear at the top of the list, but you can also search for a specific user by typing their name. If you do not assign a user
    5. Select another phase and repeat steps c and d.

13. Select OK to save any modified settings and to close the Project Template Settings dialog. The modified project template is now available for selection when you create a new project.

Importing project templates

When you import project templates, SDL Trados Studio makes them available for editing and for selection (when you create a new project). This option is particularly useful if you want to use project templates from other team members.

Procedure

  1. Go to File > Setup > Project Templates.
  2. In the Project Templates dialog, select Import.
  3. In the Open Project Template dialog, select the template ( *.sdltpl) you want to import, and then select Open. The template is now displayed in the Project Templates list.
  4. Select Close.

Creating projects using project templates

When you want to create projects that use the same settings, you can start such projects from an existing template. This is useful when your projects are similar and you want to save time.

Procedure

  1. Go to File > New > New Project.
  2. In the New Project wizard, on the Project Type page, go to the Create a project based on a project template box and select the required template from the drop-down list. The selections in the New Project wizard will now be populated with the selections from the template.
  3. Move through the different pages of the wizard and make changes to the existing settings as needed.
  4. When you have finished selecting the settings you want to prepare the project, select Finish. On the Preparing Project page, the progress bars indicate what task the process has reached. Once a task is complete, to see errors or reports based on the task, select the task, and then select Task Results.
  5. When all of the tasks have been completed on the Preparing Project page and the project has been created, the Project Template settings are displayed. Specify if you want to save the project settings for future use in a template by:
    • Creating a new template
    • Editing the template on which you based the project
    • Not saving the settings to a template
  6. Select Close. This button is not active until the project is created. If a project was not created due to errors in the tasks, this button remains inactive, in which case select Back to change the settings and restart the creating process.
